15 Structured Abacus Levels: The Complete Curriculum
Classical soroban education succeeds because it breaks math into tiny, structured movement formulas. Each level introduces one concept, gives guided visual tips, and provides practice problems that build upon previously mastered skills.
Overview of the 15 Abacus Buddy Levels

Little Friends & Big Friends Explained
The core innovation of the soroban is turning complex mental addition into simple complement pairs:
Little Friends (Target: 5)
When you need to add beads to the lower deck but fewer than needed are available, you borrow the upper 5-bead and subtract the difference:
- +4: Add 5, take away 1
- +3: Add 5, take away 2
- +2: Add 5, take away 3
- +1: Add 5, take away 4
Big Friends (Target: 10)
When an entire column totals 10 or more, you carry 1 bead up into the tens column to the left, and subtract the complement on the ones rod:
- +9: Add 10, take away 1
- +8: Add 10, take away 2
- +7: Add 10, take away 3
- +6: Add 10, take away 4
- +5: Add 10, take away 5
